Offshore Wind

A future powered by renewable energy

The growing demand for sustainability in the energy industry has driven up both the cost and the complexity of fossil-fuel extraction. Against this backdrop, offshore wind is one of the fastest-growing sectors, where FERRI stands out worldwide for its naval expertise and innovative anti-corrosion treatments — a critical challenge for these ocean installations.

Vulnerability to corrosion in wind infrastructure

Offshore wind infrastructure is particularly vulnerable to corrosion — among the worst affected globally. Unlike offshore oil platforms, which rely on permanent maintenance crews, wind installations can remain unattended for long periods. This lack of on-site support poses serious challenges for preserving the structural integrity of the steel, which has led to specific standards such as ISO 12944 and EU 13852-3, prescribing treatments that can extend the service life of metallic structures up to 25 years against adverse conditions.

Tailored solutions for structural protection

At FERRI we carry out a thorough analysis of the characteristics of every offshore wind farm where our equipment operates. This evaluation lets us anticipate risks and design tailor-made solutions, ensuring maximum adaptation to the specific conditions of each installation. For example, some of our systems include a zinc layer on every part to improve corrosion resistance, while others require ceramic or epoxy-resin coatings. In critical areas — such as the Splash zone, exposed to mechanical impact from other elements or vessels — we incorporate a chloroprene layer, a synthetic rubber that absorbs impact and protects the metal beneath.
